Review: 2wice Date

My main bias, Mina, and bias wrecker, Jeongyeon, opened the new 2wice’s Date Season Two episode as JEONGMI. They were both making Lego cars, mainly because Jeongyeon expressed a desire to do something Mina liked. Whilst working on the cars they chatted up a storm, which is unusual particularly for Mina, who’s an introvert. Jeongyeon, who’s not a Lego expert, struggled with her car, while Mina had hers finished early. The conversation ranged far and wide, but not in the direction I was especially interested in: namely, the possibility of a Jeongyeon solo album. The conversation about diets was revealing. I’d never thought of having bland food to manage a diet, but that’s what Mina said she did. Jeongyeon added that tasty food was no good because it made you want to have more. At the end Jeongyeon said Mina had talked enough for her and now needed a rest. Their comfortable friendship was a balm to the soul…

Members Nayeon and Momo were featured in the latest round of 2wice Date videos on Youtube. Basically, it was a mukbang (eating show) with the two of them (collectively known as the Peach Sisters) eating lots of food (mostly pizza) and trying their darndest not to get too emotional. Basically, they succeeded, which I thought was a pity. Some of the Youtube comments had a go at psychoanalyzing the ladies, but I won’t do that here. At one point Nayeon suggested they discuss some of the bad styling concepts they’ve committed, but Momo obviously didn’t want to go there. Maybe she didn’t think there had been any. Again, a pity, because that would have at least been interesting. For any Once, it’s always fun to watch the members do just about anything, but there just wasn’t anything really new in this video…

I watched another in the 2wice Date series, this time featuring Tzuyu and Dahyun, or DaTzu. They were participating in a flower arrangement class and chatting about their friendship and their lives. It was all very cute and healing but the conversation didn’t stray into any revealing areas. I liked the bit where they each took a thorn from a rose and placed them on their noses. I remember doing that when I was a kid. The rhinoceros nose. I really wanted to know if either of them were going to do some official solo things, like Nayeon, Jihyo and Misamo have done. Apart from what’s called their ‘Melody Projects’ (solo showcases), neither of them, or Chaeyoung, has done an official solo release. The three of them are the youngest members, the Maknaes, and they do have a collective title, the Twice Meal Club, from a series of videos they made early on. Could that be an official solo project? I don’t know. Visually the three members look a little ungainly. Chaeyoung and Dahyun or both quite short, while Tzuyu’s the tallest member. Chaeyoung and Dahyun could make a great duo. In fact they did a Melody Project for the song Switch To Me under the name DubChaeng and they looked so good together. The two are the featured rappers in the group, though lately they haven’t had much to do in that regard as Twice’s singles seem to be moving away from having rap breakdowns. Perhaps they could go into other areas. Dahyun has proven herself to be a talented TV presenter, she’s so extra when the camera’s on her…And so on. Anyway, that’s sort of how I hoped the conversation would go. Sometimes you have to answer your own questions…

Finished off the night with some Youtubes. The main one was the latest 2wice Date episode, which featured Twice members Chaeyoung and Jihyo (JiChaeng) talking and having a meal at a strange ‘darkness’ cafe. For the first half of the episode they were actually sitting in the dark, eating their meal and occasionally playing with a lie detector device they were provided with. This allowed for a confession that Chaeyoung, who is the second youngest member, is still a little uncomfortable around Jihyo, who is the group’s leader, and with whom she still uses formal language with. It was only a modest reveal, nothing to get excited about, but we Onces live by these details. One nice moment was when they touched each others faces in the dark. Soon, the lights were turned on and the ‘date’ reached its conclusion with each member reading the letters they had written to each other in the dark (yes, in the dark!). Both members have recently been revealed to have boyfriends, but I guess it would’ve been too much to ask for them to talk about them, or the ‘controversy’ around how it got reported. Next week should be the final 2wice Date, which will feature Sana and the return of one other member. Odds seem to favour it being Jeongyeon. We’ll see.

I watched the last of the season two 2wice Date videos today. As expected, it featured Jeongyeon and Sana, this time ‘glamping’ in some un-named facility. I hadn’t heard the term before, so that’s a new one on me – apparently it means a form of camping more luxurious than those associated with traditional camping. Which makes sense. Jeongyeon, who is a committed camper, was cooking up a mess of food, including something called tomahawk steak, for Sana, who mainly just sat back and ate. It was one of the most relaxed of the date videos, similar in a way to Jeongyeon’s date with Mina. Jeongyeon seems to have a relaxing way which puts people at ease. But, then again, so does Sana. Jeongyeon made a thing called tanghulu for dessert, which is basically glazed grapes, but I don’t think they came out too well – going by Sana’s response to them. I had these when I was in Japan, and they were one of my favourite things: like toffee apples but with grapes. I liked that they felt comfortable enough to talk about their strenuous work load. There was also a little reveal about the aborted Cry For Me album, which the group decided not to pursue because Jeongyeon could not participate in it (she was on medical hiatus). During the date they came up with a new ‘chemistry name’ for themselves (basically when two member’s names are combined as a friendship team). It was ‘No TG’ – a shortened version of ‘don’t take things for granted’.

I wonder if there’ll be another season of 2wice Dates. If so, I want to see Dahyun and Jihyo together. Have they ever teamed up?
