Bought a couple of dvds at a stall in Chirnside Park. They were When Worlds Collide and The Girl On a Motorcycle. A nice pickup. Watched When Worlds Collide later. It’s a terrific very early entry in the disaster movie genre. I’d say it even maps out many of the beats that most of the later movies used, like the mass panic and the angry push back from those who won’t survive. But the people in this one react pretty stoically I’d have to say. The wandering planet that comes into our solar system and causes the damage is also the cause of the survivor’s rescue because they hop a ship and land on it as the Earth is destroyed. There’s one wheelchair-bound rich bastard who tries to take over the rescue project, right down to choosing who gets to be saved, but he’s nicely shouted down by the head of the project, who promptly sacrifices himself and the rich guy so the younger passengers can survive. There’s an amazing scene where a character jumps off a helicopter in mid-air to rescue a boy stranded on a rooftop. It’s done in one shot and you can see how close the stuntman gets to the rotating blades. The science and sexual politics are a bit iffy but it’s overall a very taut and well-told story.
