Youtube’s nutty algorithms threw up an interesting clip for me tonight. It was something that purported to be a lost or banned song from the 1950s called Do You Wanna Fondle My Tits? And sung (beautifully sung, I might add) by some Fifties babe called Wilma Dikfit. The thumbnail image was an AI generated image of a standard Fifties babe with big tits. In short, it was stupid and bawdy and I loved it. The site that promoted it, called Sus Records, has plenty more where that came from, including songs called I Like It In the Pooper and Dick In Your Mouth. These are obviously recorded recently but made to sound like they could be vintage. As a basic concept, this is gold. The comments section for these clips throws up funny punny lines like ‘As a dairy farmer this brings back sweet mammories’. There’s at least one other ‘label’ called SpookyDooky Recordz that releases stuff like this. Sus Records’ stuff is actually on Spotify. SpookyDooky’s on YT Music.
Finally played and digitised my Ann Wilson LP Fierce Bliss. Sounds good but I’m not sure at this stage if her band sounds as good as Heart. Her voice is still powerful though. She does Queen’s Love of My Life and Eurythmics’ Missionary Man as well as a bunch of originals. One of these, Gladiator, sounds appropriately epic.
Watched a lot of Nmixx content on Youtube. Saw the new music videos for High Horse and Know About Me. Good songs, can’t wait to get the album.
Also watched a bunch of music videos from my recent Rage pvr recording. Bonnie Trash were indeed good, but there were others I liked, such as Worm Girlz, Miso Extra, Hunamankind, Robert Ascroft, Scowl, Baker Boy, 9Lives, Jennie, The Volunteers, Horse, Viagra Boys, Foley and Matt Maltese.
Watched some more Nmixx content on Youtube. Was a nice segment where the members discussed the lore of the FE304 albums, their origins and progression.
Picked up my Kpop goodies at the K-pop Time store. They were Nayeon’s Yes I Am Nayeon book and the new Nmixx album, FE304 Forward. I’ve had Forward on high rotation in the car lately. Really like the two singles, High Horse, Know About Me and Papillon. There isn’t a digipak version so I had to make do with the ridiculous packaging of the ‘Ready’ version that I unwrapped when I got home. Got two cards, a Jiwoo and a joint Bae and Haewon, which is nice. Strangely, when I opened it, I found another Nmixx card within my Nayeon book. This one was Kyujin. I’ve yet to get a Sullyoon.
The Nayeon book is nice, but I would have liked more shots of her smiling. Some of the concepts worked better than others and there wasn’t much that teased out Nayeon’s personality. The highlights are individual shots from each of the shoots. It was not a necessary poichase, but I’m glad I have it.
My book reservation of Who We’re Reading When We’re Reading Murakami by David Karashima came through today. Started reading it. It seems strange and a little silly to be reading a book about an author whose work I haven’t read yet. I at least plan to read Norwegian Wood, but for now it’s just the people who helped him get popular, like his editors, translators and publishers. I kind of like the meta remove. There are big insights to be gained about how the publishing industry works.
Watched The Platform film on Netflix. A brilliant concept well done. Not for the squeamish! Gave it four stars on Letterboxd. There were entertaining details, like the woman who comes down on the platform looking for her lost son, and the prisoner who actually brought a dog with her. I also liked how we never see the mechanism that moves the platform; it’s like it magically levitates all by itself.
My colleague at work, Jess, told me about a great thing she does with the newspapers we offer patrons at the library. Like me, she’s not happy that we have to stock those fucking Murdoch papers, with just The Age as the only marginally ‘independent’ rag. So she’s able to get copies of the highly independent paper The Saturday Paper and puts them out for perusal too. I like this idea. The only pity is I think it’s only Jess who does this at her library at Boronia. We should try to do it at all the libraries. Jess said she’s put in a proposal to Admin about officially stocking that newspaper, but they haven’t been responsive so far.
While at the library today I had the idea of the Science Fiction Band. A band that does nothing but science fiction themed songs. I have to start writing those! And why not? I’ve always liked the idea of a band that was a continuation of Bowie’s Spiders From Mars but that would branch out beyond the usual glam rock tropes. It certainly provides a focus.
Bought a couple of dvds at a stall in Chirnside Park. They were When Worlds Collide and The Girl On a Motorcycle. A nice pickup. Watched When Worlds Collide later. It’s a terrific very early entry in the disaster movie genre. I’d say it even maps out many of the beats that most of the later movies used, like the mass panic and the angry push back from those who won’t survive. But the people in this one react pretty stoically I’d have to say. The wandering planet that comes into our solar system and causes the damage is also the cause of the survivor’s rescue because they hop a ship and land on it as the Earth is destroyed. There’s one wheelchair-bound rich bastard who tries to take over the rescue project, right down to choosing who gets to be saved, but he’s nicely shouted down by the head of the project, who promptly sacrifices himself and the rich guy so the younger passengers can survive. There’s an amazing scene where a character jumps off a helicopter in mid-air to rescue a boy stranded on a rooftop. It’s done in one shot and you can see how close the stuntman gets to the rotating blades. The science and sexual politics are a bit iffy but it’s overall a very taut and well-told story.
The Misamo girls have been doing the first pitch throw thing for Japanese baseball and it’s been pretty funny. Momo did some practice throws before the game and her aim was so bad she hit some people. Didn’t harm them (I think she was using soft baseballs). All three did their pitches at the same time to three catchers. They mostly made it over the plate but there was no power in them. They had great form though. That leg up stance was fine. Just once though I’d love to see one of these idol girls smoke a straight fast ball over home plate.
I was reading my Encyclopedia of Australian Rock. I’m up to the S’s and just read the section on Split Enz. An interesting comment about the Mental Notes album that some songs were like Mervyn Peake and Gormenghast – there’s even a song there called Titus. Wikipedia says ‘much of the material was derived from Tim Finn’s and Phil Judd’s fascination with the work of the renowned English writer and artist Mervyn Peake’. I checked them out on Spotify and the only one that really reminds me of Gormenghast is Stranger Than Fiction, which could be from the point of view of Fuschia, Titus’ sister.
Played some Space Colony when I got home. Got onto a level where it’s just Venus and Mr Cheng trying to mine some iron with the help of some extra robots. A fun little level though I didn’t finish it first time around. Cheng’s there to make the robots and I had Venus working the iron miner but the power kept cutting out due to no one working the power board. Cheng can’t do it and I didn’t get a training machine to train him up. The two robots I got Cheng to make didn’t work out so well, or I just didn’t use them well: put one on the power board and one on a miner but they both crapped out before long. I’ll give it another go tomorrow with a better strategy.
Played another round of Space Colony. This time I got through that Venus and Mr Cheng level. Went on to other levels, including one where a sole Venus has to make her way through an obstacle course to get to a second base to save Stig. She got there in the end, after one failed try in which she died. It was very reminiscent of another level on the main game where Venus is alone, but that one’s way harder than this.
Started watching the latest Sailor Moon film on Netflix called Sailor Moon Cosmos. It seems to be a reboot of the final season featuring the Starlights trio, and Mamaru goes off to America to study. Or does he? And why doesn’t Usagi remember what happened to him? Was it a hallucination?
